It was Saturday the next day, so Rachel and Neptune decided to go visit Shark. They didn’t go empty handed either, as Mrs Clover had baked several pies. They took one with them.

Shark was out of bed and dressed now, despite Rebecca’s fussing. They were in the lounge room when the other two turned up. It was Shark that let them in. “G’day,” he greeted.

“Hello, Shark,” said Rachel handing him the still warm apple pie. “Mrs Clover’s been baking.”

He grinned and took the pie. “Come in.”

“How are you feeling, Shark?”

“Heaps better, Rach. Can come back to work right now if you like,” he added to Neptune.

Neptune smiled. “That’s good news. I’m not sure there is anything to do today. However, I did get lucky last night. Dowsey admitted to losing things all the time and not caring about them. He doesn’t have any close friends, so I think it is fairly safe to rule them out. Even his work colleagues only socialize with him casually. A few drinks at the pub, that sort of thing. They don’t come home with him. He does however, have a brother.” He filled Shark in on his latest findings. “I thought I would locate him the easy way. I’ll give John a ring later and ask him to check if John Dowsey has a driver’s license. That will list his address. Come Monday we can stake him out and follow him to work. It won’t hurt knowing a little bit more about him. Then we’ll need to figure out a way of confronting him and preventing him from exposing the princess.”

“Yeah, that ain’t gunna be easy. Even if we get the letter back from him, he still knows about it.”

Neptune nodded and sat down. Shark handed the pie to Becky who took it out to the kitchen. “What if,” began Shark as an idea occurred to him.

Neptune looked up at him hopefully. “Yes?”

“Just a notion. What if we blackmailed him?”

“What?”

“You reckon he’s lost his wife’s money on the stock market and she doesn’t know it yet. Well, why don’t we threaten to tell his wife if he goes through with the blackmail, plus threaten to turn him over to the cops. He’s got a lot to lose.”

“Hmm.” Neptune looked thoughtful. “The only problem I see with that is that his wife will eventually find out because without the princess’ jewels, he can’t replace the lost money.”

“Still...”

“Yes, still the threat of going to jail may be enough to convince him. His wife’s wrath would be the lesser of his problems.”

“It’s worth a try.”

“Yes, in fact, I think it’s a very good idea. Dowsey called him a do-gooder. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is his first foray into crime. The threat of prison may be enough to scare him into handing the letter over and keeping quiet.”

Shark grinned. “Glad it’s almost over then, although I gotta admit I feel a little guilty. You’ve done most of the work on this case.”

Neptune smiled. “That’s the whole idea of running a partnership.
